The City
The City of Calgary is nestled at the eastern slopes of the Canadian Rocky Mountains and is centrally located within southern Alberta. Roughly 315 km (175 miles ) north of the U.S./Montana Border, 1125 km (700 miles ) northeast of Seattle, Washington and 3200 km (2000 miles) west of Toronto, Ontario, Calgary’s closest port access is nearly 950 km (600 miles ) to the west in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Calgary’s unique location provides for breaks in the typical doldrums of winter within our world famous Chinook conditions that can send the thermometer from 25 below to about 25 above and all in a few short hours. Over 50% of Canada’s economic transactions occur in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and Calgary leaving Calgary as the ‘heart of the new west’.
Following the 1875 construction of Fort Calgary for the North West Mounted Police was the development of the City of Calgary. Based on the areas abundant resource base its lands soon saw a land driven economic foundation of the cattle and oil industries. Six years later the Canadian Pacific Railroad arrived bringing in settlers farmers and ranchers whose diverse cultural influence have remained as the foundation of Calgary’s heritage. Calgary has been voted as one of the cleanest cities in North America and seems dedicated to maintain an unique blend of architecture in accommodation of the areas specific characteristics.
From the Calgary Tower’s rise from the urban landscape to the word renowned Saddledome countless longstanding structures of historical and cultural significance are all pinned against the panoramic backdrop of the majestic Rocky Mountains, Calgary is a sight to see.
